Presidents Report

This design is one of the options we have. It would cost approximately $200,000 to build. It is a steel construction with a colour bond roof and it would have laser lighting down both sides of the double building. One is 6m X 12m, the other 4.8m by 12m, all timber lined. The smaller one has a mezanine floor for storage and the ground floor underneath could easily be heated. There would be a kitchen and amenities area at the back and a set of bi-fold doors between the buildings for concerts, dances and plays. A four door entrance and large timber veranda out the front. This prominent design will look aesthetically pleasing with the existing buildings with view over the park. The council will act with us to ask for a government grant. We will need to raise half. The price does not include demolition and removal of existing building. All we need is to dig deep and get it off the ground.

As many of us were away and there was no urgent business to discuss the April meeting of the potters was cancelled. Our RAKU firing date has been put forward to 5th & 6th of June. Of course this has nothing to do with the rumour that nobody had any pots made!

Business has been slow lately. There are still a number of visitors but not many are buying. We have some fantastic new cards in at very reasonable prices. These are quite
unique and fit all occasions. With the price of commercial cards it is a great idea to pop in and stock up on a few, maybe some of our pretty earrings too. Jan

Life Drawing

Our members have been down since I last reported but the last few weeks we’ve picked up. There were four new people last week who expressed a desire to join our Centre.
As a group we need to begin planning for our Annual Exhibition soon. Last year I believe was our most successful
exhibition, but there is no need to continue doing things the same way each year. If you have any new ideas please pass them on to us.
Congratulations to the new people who were willing to step up and be available to attend the centre’s meetings and do their bit. I find it encouraging that five of our committee members began as Life Drawers! Joy

Classes and Workshops Report

We had a rather slow enrollment for our second term this year. Some classes have only just held numbers and
others have not run due to lack of numbers. We welcome back Joanna Jenson, who is taking a children's "Fun Art" Class on Monday afternoons. The timetable for Term 3 is in progress and
will be posted on the website shortly. Also look for it in the next Creations. Enrollment Day for Term 3 is Saturday 24th July. Many of the workshops offered have not gone ahead due to lack of numbers as well. So here's another plea to all of you members out there. Come along and support the BMCAC before it disappears altogether! It's always fun to get together and learn a new skill or just gather with like-minded folk and have a day of creativity. A special call for numbers for the Batik workshop coming up on the 13th June. You'll go home with some great new goodies too. Just ring Vicki to book your spot, or send an email to

Raku Firing

For all those interested in witnessing a spectacular dis- play, the Potters group are having a RAKU firing day
on Saturday 5th June. (Weather pending- ringJan 4735 4747, it may be on
Sunday if weather is bad on Saturday). Raku pottery is created with a specific ceramic firing
process that uses both fire and smoke to create unique patterns and designs. The raku firing process requires a special raku kiln that is fueled by propane and reaches temperatures of about 982°C.
The day usually begins early and there should be some beautiful pots to see around 10am.
We are still communicating with the Blue Mountains City Council about the different grants we can apply for.
They have been absolutely marvelous with their help for our group. A building grant is something we are looking closely at. There are also other grants available for Art and Cultural collaborations. We will keep you our members as closely updated as we can. If you would like to know more, please come along to the monthly committee meetings.

Batik Workshop with Sally Grant

Sally will be holding a batik Workshop on Sunday 13th June at the BMCAC studio.
Explore the styles and history of traditional and contemporary batik in this unique workshop. Students will
go home with a batik art bag or artwork on fabric & some test pieces on fabric.
The cost of this workshop is $80 and it starts at 10:00 and finishes at 4:00. Bring your lunch, apron or shirt to protect clothing (the fabric dyes will stain clothing), also any visual stimulus such as images you like, organic forms such as shells, seed pods, fruit, etc. All other materials will be supplied. Cost of materials per student is $10.50
Batik is a process of using hot wax and dyes. Experiment with batik application and dying processes to create stunning artworks on fabric. Using a var- iety of forms and images as stimulus Sally will guide you through the batik techniques, and help develop and extend your understanding of colour relationships and pattern making.
This class is suitable for complete beginners and more experienced students. This workshop is
primarily for adults but if you have a child 14+ thatwouldliketoparticipatetheyare more than welcome.

It is a great relief to have the Members Exhibition over. It looked fantastic. We received lots of compliments and positive feedback. In spite of the weather there was a steady stream of visitors, most of them customers too! It was great to have support from so many members; setting up, manning the cash desk, taking it all down, putting up signs, carting plinths etc to and from the centre, bringing a plate for that yummy supper and of course providing work for display. It was good to see lots of beautiful work there for exhibition only. It gives an extra dimension to have those treasured works on display and shows what the BMCAC is all about – encouraging the development of arts and crafts in the area. Of course the sale of work is very important too for supplying much needed funds.( $763.65 was added to our funds) A big thank you to all those members (and their families in several cases) involved and especially to those who put in over 100% to make everything run so smoothly. Give yourselves a big pat on the back.
There has been a call for help from the Anglican Retirement Villages in locating artists interested in working with their elderly residents. Henry Fulton Nursing Home and Lemongrove Gardens Recreation Activities Programs are creating a register of volunteer and paid artists. If you are interested the web site is www.arv.org.au
A big congratulations to Joe Cartwright who won the Viewers Choice Award at the Henry Lawson Festival of Arts at Grenfell. It is good to hear of a fellow members success. Any more out there? Congratulations to you too!
Now something for the gardeners. Frank and Julie Wall, prize winning local orchid growers will be giving a talk on their special blooms at the Penrith Regional Gallery & Lewers Bequest at 10 am on Wednesday, August 26. The $10 entry includes morning tea. RSVP by Fri, August 21 on 4735 1100. I can recommend this, their orchids are stunning and they explain away all the difficulties in growing them, besides the gallery is such a special place to visit!

Potters Report

At the last meeting Jenny Miller gave us a talk about her collection of antique dolls, explaining how they were made. It was interesting to see the different styles, especially the hair styles and how each one reflected something of the fashions of the time. These dolls were not for the little girls to play with as they do today. Members then checked the raku glazes in preparation for their raku firing day next month. The exhibition date has been changed to October 3&4, a week earlier than previously planned.

Fund Raising and Maintenance

You must have realised by now that the BMCAC is seriously short of funds and eating away at those we have as each year passes. There have been several suggestions made but the overworked committee would like help implementing them. They are:
• a smaller exhibition and sale of work near Xmas in our own premises
• another garage sale
• a car boot sale – possibly tied in with the above
• a theatre trip to see” Wizard”
• more local advertising in “Creations”
If you can help with any of these to keep the Centre in the black and our doors open for classes etc please come to the next committee meeting ( they are open to all members) on August 6 at 7.30 in the main room.
A big thank you to John McCann who has fixed the railing at the side of the main building. There are lots of jobs that need doing. If you are interested in helping please contact Joy.

Teacher Liaison Report

Term 3 timetable is ready. We have a new teacher offering Children’s Drawing and Painting on Thursday afternoons. Michelle Stephens has credentials and experience in illustration, drawing and painting. She has an interesting and challenging plan for the class. We just need to establish numbers for the class to go ahead. Please spread the word. Other class numbers have been fluctuating but hopefully this will improve next term.
Enrolment day is Saturday 1st August, but remember that you can enrol early. Go to the website bmcac.com to download the forms, or pop into the gallery and pay via envelope or credit card. You can also email your intentions to bmcac.mail@gmail.com

DREAMING – an exhibition of paintings by Ingrid Russell

Ingrid will be holding a solo exhibition at The Event Horizon Gallery in Katoomba from Wednesday 3rd August to Sunday 16th August.

The main focus of her current work is based on an intuitive form of expressionist abstract and figurative works, which Ingrid draws from her “personal dreaming”. Her bold use of colour and line work has images jumping from the canvas. “I start with layers of colour and the images emerge, often surprising me. Once the theme has emerged, the painting quickly resolves, as if by itself. I become the catalyst through which the canvas speaks”. Ingrid only recently started this style of painting and has found great satisfaction from letting her imagination free reign.

Ingrid has also created a children’s picture book featuring 12 of her paintings and drawings, which will also be on display. “Beauty in the Woods” will be launched at the opening of her exhibition, Saturday 8th from 2:00 till 4:00pm, and signed copies will be available for purchase.

An invitation is extended to all BMCAC members to attend the opening.

Gallery Chit Chat

There was a changeover after the exhibition. There is not much new work but everything has been cleaned and rearranged. We now have a floral themed centrepiece as well as a small fibre display. There are plenty of lovely scarves, gloves and bedsocks, all ideal for this chilly weather.
As there is a shortage of members available to for duty, due to illness and holidays, the gallery will be closed for half a day on Sundays during August and possibly September. While there have not been great sales there has been quite a number of people popping in to see what the gallery is all about, many of them for the first time.
